How to organize an organic cotton project

The flow chart below provides an overview of the main steps to follow when designing and setting up an organic cotton project. Click on the boxes to learn more about each step. More detailed and comprehensive information is available in the Organic Cotton Project Guide.

Understanding market opportunities

Get an idea of potential markets and trends for organic cotton and rotation crops. Identify products that are in demand and can be produced locally.

Linking partners along the value chain

Identify interested processing and trade partners, and agree on the terms of collaboration. Tie-up with suitable service providers and financial partners. Coordinate stakeholders and clarify roles.

Organising farmers and extension services

Identify farmers interested in joining the project. Define the organisational set-up and the roles of the stakeholders involved. Build up an extension team. Design suitable farming systems jointly.

Organising certification and quality management

Arrange for external certification (organic, Fairtrade, etc.). Design the internal control system (ICS) and quality management measures. Develop the necessary documents.

Trade and marketing

Get commitments from buyers and agree on conditions. Calculate prices and prepare offers. Organise processing and marketing of cotton and rotation crops.
